“With India facing an acute power shortage, the government’s support and encouragement of energy efficient products and technologies will not only save on electricity but also reduce carbon emissions. Given that the government is already encouraging renewable energy initiatives in solar and wind power, the lighting industry too is looking forward to the support of the government. The criticality is borne out by the fact that lighting consumes 20% of all electrical energy consumption! As we are still using energy inefficient incandescent lights and CFLs containing mercury and phosphorous, it’s obvious that LEDs hold a great promise as they will provide us with an option for drastically reducing power consumption and carbon footprints. The government can strongly support the lighting industry by encouraging LED research and manufacturing. Currently, while the US and Europe lead in LED research, China leads in LED manufacturing. We have the potential to lead in both LED research and manufacturing! Given that the market for LEDs is growing incrementally, support for local manufacturing will drive down costs and lead to a broader and deeper adoption of LEDs. On another front, we also urge the government to introduce strong legislation to discourage the Chinese market from dumping spurious LEDs in India which seriously erodes our reputation with regard to quality and value. It would also be great if the government considers excise duty exemptions and IT exemptions for companies manufacturing LEDs and LED light fittings. This would greatly bring down the end-user price and speed up the adoption rate of LEDs in the country” .
