S.Sundaresan, President, All India Coir Mattress Mfrs' Association

Presently the whole world is addressing the most important and vital matter of climate change very critically. At this juncture I request Hon'ble Finance Minister to encourage the Rubberised Coir Mattresses which are highly Eco-friendly and bio-degradable. Against the stiff competition given by other sleep products like PU Foam, Metallic Spring Mattresses etc. the coir mattress has to survive by its merit only. About 7 Lakhs people are working in this industry down the line from the coconut husk processing with more than 50% as women folk. In terms of the WTO agreement signed by Govt. of India, I appeal for the waiver of taxes and duties on this products. Further I request the Minister to encourage the renewable source of energy in rural India especially of solar, wind and electricity from bio-mass. In rural South India more than 10 months get the sun shine very effectively. It is highly worth to install solar water heaters for homes and industries. It is also recommended for educational institutions with hostels and to commercial establishments like hotels and hospitals. A special treatment on taxes should be given for people using the above source of energy so that more and more people are attracted to follow the suit. The coir products also deserve Eco-Mark labelling and the Govt. of India should take immediate steps to pupularise the Eco-Mark which will pave way to use natural products and to avoid synthetic substitutes. This is one of the very prudent method of attacking the climate change with innovative and attractive method of reducing taxes and offering incentives.
