Mr. Chandrashekar Hariharan, CEO and CO FOUNDER, BCIL

It is time for a sharp impetus the FM can offer by pushing green and clean tech buildings. Simple incentives that are offered as tax breaks or rebates for companies that build only certified green buildings will be a big boost to save energy and make our cities manageable.

Even a mere Rs. 500 crore on the massive budget of India, dedicated for such incentives for the building industry can make a huge difference to the impetus and encouragement that the building industry needs in order to invite such technologies.

For example, if every builder who makes only certified green buildings at the post construction level and not at the promised pre-design certification, is given a tax holiday for 5 years, you will see a big shift in companies that dedicate themselves to making such changes to their approach to design and construction.

Architects and service consultants need to be offered income tax incentives for green projects that they promote. India needs over 10,000 such credit-rating assessors in the next 3 years! There are over 500 cities/towns of the total of 3700 urban agglomerations that have to go green on every building that is put up.

The FM must take on board seriously the clear writing on the wall on the damage to our fragile ecosystems; of how our cities should use 50 per cent less energy, 70 per cent less water; it should treat waste in a way that city infrastructure demands are reduced by 70 per cent.

By such a gesture of a noticeable set of guidelines and measures for the green building industry, the FM will have sent out a clear signal that India is earnest on climate change concerns and that as a growing superpower India will set the right example for the world.

Mr. Chandrashekar Hariharan
